To play for weddings and funerals where possible (NB we are fortunate in having a small number of people able to play the organ on an occasional basis who could cover some weddings/funerals plus holiday periods or other commitments)
To advise the Churchwardens on the condition and functioning of the organ
In liaison with the Churchwardens to oversee regular and one-off maintenance work undertaken to maintain the organ’s condition.
The organ:
The presence of Glyndebourne Opera House within its boundaries has had more than one beneficial consequence for the Parish of Ringmer. Among the most notable was the gift in 1922 of a large organ to the Parish Church by John Christie, the founder of Glyndebourne Opera. The organ, by Hill, Norman & Beard (organ builders by appointment to HM the Queen) is one of the finest in Sussex and possibly the largest in a village church anywhere in the country. All in all the Ringmer organ is a delight to play, and is much appreciated by those who worship at St Mary the Virgin.
For full details of the organ and the renovations that have taken place, please read the leaflet entitled The Organ.
